A wide yard is more of a luxury than the norm these days but it does not mean that your small yard can’t feel luxurious. Just because you have a small yard doesn’t mean you should feel left out from the joys that a well-managed yard can give. Although that is the case, you may find yourself unable to think of ways to spruce up your yard. We’ve listed seven ways you can decorate your backyard to make it the cozy dream it can be.
1. Give Your Space Function
An effective way to decide exactly how to decorate your quaint backyard is by assigning a function for it. You can assign a single use for space or you can section them out based on activity.
If you’re frequently inviting other people over, consider making your yard a hub for socializing. Set up seating arrangements and a couple of tables for your guests to lounge around on.
Or maybe you’re into a particular hobby like cooking. Then you can set up one dining area, a grilling area, and a garden area for herbs and a small vegetable plantation.
If you know what you want to do with space, it makes it much easier to fill up. This will, in turn, make it easier to decide how you want to spruce up the place.
2. Grow Your Own Greenery
Any space with plants in them gives a little burst of life into space. This little tidbit also counts for your yard.
A quick way to make your small yard a boost is by adding some plants around it. Bursts of color from various flowers and shrubberies will give your yard the life it needs.
Plants aren’t just pretty little things to sprinkle around your yard. They can be utilitarian too. We’ve previously suggested starting a vegetable and herb garden so if you’re planning on adding greeneries, why not have the added benefit of produce?
3. Cheat Height With Vertical Landscaping
A tiny backyard is unlikely to give way, width wise. But there are plenty of other options you can work with height wise! This is where vertical landscaping comes in.
If the idea of setting up a garden in your yard makes you think that it can suffocate the space instead, don’t worry. You can simply plant them vertically. Think wooden trellises, or maybe some garden pot hangers.
You can also put up hanging decorations, designer bricks company like Firth offers highly attractive products that you can use when designing your home or you can have a living wall using wall planters.
Set up tall decorations or plants to make the eye drift upwards. This will give the illusion of a wider space when executed well.
4. Sort Out Your Seating
No matter what you plan to do with your yard, it’s always important to consider your outdoor seating arrangements. There are many ways you can plan outdoor seating.
If you plan to do a lot of backyard entertaining, consider a piece of connected seating furniture that surrounds a campfire or a table. It makes it warm and homey while being able to seat a lot of people.
If you don’t plan to entertain a lot of people in your yard, then a few outdoor chairs are fine. Two or three chairs and a small table could be enough.
5. Add Bold Colors To Your Small Backyard
Aside from the aforementioned ways to spruce up a small yard, one simple way to make your yard pop is by adding bold colors to your yard. It’s cheap, easy, and fun to do.
This would be most effective when you add vibrant colors into the mix to a yard with a natural color swatch. Don’t be afraid of adding pops of pink into your color mix!
You can add these bursts of color through your outdoor furniture or other fixtures. Or you can use flowers to give that visual effect instead.
Make sure you don’t use all vibrant colors for your entire swatch. Otherwise, the colors won’t have that pop around your yard.
The key here is to choose colors that what would make you happy to see in your yard. But sticking to complementary colors is good enough.
6. Add Wildlife
Plants aren’t the only living things you can have to make your yard feel alive. Small animals can give that effect too.
Bird baths and bird feeders can help attract birds to your garden. You can even try your hand at making a birdhouse. These are nice ways to make your yard the next big tourist spot for local birds all around you.
7. Landscaping Maintenance
Sometimes a little love goes a long way. That’s why maintaining your yard on a regular basis is important–big or small.
Maybe you’ve got overgrown shrubberies. Maybe your lawn needs a little mowing action. Just trim those branches and cut that grass and your yard will look spiffy quick.
This’ll make sure all your decorating efforts didn’t go to waste. And the light exercise may even do you a little good.
